Common dental emergencies
When to Call Us Right Away
Not every dental problem can wait for a routine appointment. Here are some of the most common reasons patients call us for urgent care.
Severe or persistent toothache
Ongoing pain can point to decay, infection, or a cracked tooth — it's rarely something to wait out.
Knocked-out tooth
A tooth knocked out in a fall or sports injury has the best chance of being saved if you're seen quickly.
Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
From a small chip to a more serious fracture, a damaged tooth should be checked to prevent further damage or infection.
Lost filling or crown
A missing filling or crown can expose sensitive areas of a tooth and should be addressed promptly.
Dental abscess or facial swelling
Swelling, especially with fever or difficulty swallowing, can signal a spreading infection that needs urgent attention.
Object caught between teeth
Something lodged between teeth that won't come loose with gentle flossing can cause discomfort and gum irritation.
What to do
Steps to Take Before You See Us
Call our office right away
Let our team know what's happened so we can advise you and find the soonest available appointment, including same-day when possible.
Manage pain and swelling at home
A cold compress and over-the-counter pain relief can help until you're seen. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
Save any broken pieces or a knocked-out tooth
Keep a knocked-out tooth moist — in milk or a saline solution — and bring it with you. Time matters for reattachment.
Come in for your appointment
We'll assess the issue, help manage your pain, and walk you through next steps for treatment.
Common questions
Emergency Dentistry FAQs
Does East Riverside Dental offer same-day emergency appointments?
Yes — if you're dealing with a dental emergency, call our office and we'll do our best to see you the same day. Availability can vary, so calling as early as possible helps us fit you in.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe or persistent tooth pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, facial swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding are all reasons to call right away rather than wait for a routine appointment.
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse off visible dirt without scrubbing, and try to keep it moist — in milk, saline, or tucked in your cheek — until you can get to our office. Call us immediately.
Are you accepting new patients for emergency care?
Yes — we welcome new patients throughout Windsor, Riverside, Forest Glade, and Tecumseh, including those calling about a dental emergency. Give us a call and we'll do our best to get you in.
Will my insurance or CDCP cover emergency treatment?
Many dental insurance plans and the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) provide coverage for emergency treatment. We bill most insurance providers directly and can help verify your CDCP benefits — just let us know when you call.
